Today, March 11th, is World Plumbing Day and we have a lot to celebrate here in Reading, PA. Clean water, hot showers, flushing toilets, clean clothes and sanitized dishes should never be taken for granted. March 11th was designated World Plumbing Day by the World Plumbing Council in order to raise awareness and celebrate all that plumbing does for us. Modern day plumbing is responsible for decreasing illness and death, improving efficiency and saving resources, and increasing comfort and ease in our everyday living. In fact, in 2007 the British Medical Journal asked its readers to identify the most important medical breakthrough since the creation of the journal in 1840. 11,300 readers identified clean running water and sewage disposal as the most important medical milestone, followed by antibiotics.
Unfortunately, there are many today still without basic access to clean water and sanitation. Especially on the continents of Africa and Asia, there are many people who struggle to meet basic water and sanitation needs. The World Health Organization estimates that 3.1 million die each year, most being children, because of water borne illnesses. World Plumbing Day hopes to help raise awareness of this issue. In addition, in 2005 the United Nations set a world agenda to increase access, by 2015, to safe drinking water by 97 million people annually, and to increase access to sanitation services by 138 million people annually. The Plumbing Works is proud to do our part, by keeping our customers safe, here in Reading, PA.
