Why Is My Faucet Dripping?

What causes my faucets to drip?

Faucet RepairThe dripping faucet

With the advent of indoor plumbing in the early twentieth century in American homes, running water has become the norm and an integral component of a modern home with toilets and faucets making our lifestyles that much more comfortable and enjoyable. With this comfort and enjoyment comes most homeowner’s pet peeve, the leaky faucet. A faucet that leaks needlessly increases one’s water bill, wastes one of our most precious resources, water, and can cause one to lose sleep due to the annoying and repetitive “drip, drip, drip . . .”

Typical causes of a dripping faucet

Plumbers are constantly called by homeowners to stop the dripping faucet typically caused by the following: a build up if mineral deposits from the water used in the home, the faucet degrading due to corrosive elements in the home’s water system, the faucets “o rings” wearing out, the faucet’s washers being too worn, worn out gaskets in the mechanism and the most common, one’s child sticking some foreign object into the system preventing the close of the system to prevent water from running.

Solving the Problematic Dripping Faucet

Our experience as a plumbing company is that most leaky faucets can easily be fixed by the homeowner assuming he or she has the correct tools such as a pipe wrench, screw drivers, and pliers where the usual course to remedy the problem is the replacement of the “o rings”, washers or gasket.

If their replacement does not solve the problem, then the removal of the faucet (after the main water line is turned off) is the next step. The faucet is then soaked over night in water and a mineral dissolving solution that can be purchased at most local hardware stores. This process ordinarily dissolves the built up mineral deposits that prevents the seals from closing tightly resulting in the dripping faucet. If the soaking in a mineral dissolving solution does not solve the irritating drip, the purchase of a brand new faucet and having it installed in place of the old one is guaranteed to solve the dilemma of the dripping faucet for the homeowner and bringing him or her a good night’s sleep and reducing the monthly water bill.
