Water Heater 101
What Causes Water Heater Problems?
There are various factors that can cause trouble for your water heater. If you smell a rotten egg odor coming from your unit, there is the possibility that you have anaerobic bacteria in the system, which can react with the aluminum and magnesium found in the heater’s water. This will inevitably produce hydrogen sulfide gas, which results in the rotten egg smell. This problem is quite common with well systems, whether it’s a shared or private well system.
Other water heater issues stem from whether or not they are gas powered or electric. With electric water heaters, you may run out of hot water quickly if the power has tripped. In some cases, the compartment where the chip is located can get wet, which may also cause the high power to trip.
How Long Do Units Typically Last?
The lifespan of a water heater depends on a few specific factors: the quality of the water supply, how well it’s maintained through the years, and other environmental factors that are unique to its constant location.
Traditional water heaters generally last 10 to 15 years. Tankless water heaters are known to last over 20 years. In any case, proper maintenance is important to ensure that you get the most out of your water heater.
