What are the Types of Water Treatment Systems?
Water treatment systems come in many types, shapes, and sizes. But no matter the type or where the filtration system is installed, there is a good chance that the device uses a filter media. Many water treatment systems use carbon filters to help reduce impurities. These filters generally reduce contaminants through mechanical filtration, meaning impurities are trapped in the filter. Some contaminants are trapped on the surface of the filter device.
Reverse osmosis is another type of water treatment system. This system removes impurities by pressurizing and passing the water through a semi-permeable membrane. Reverse osmosis removes many of the biological and mineral contaminants. The pressure of the water and the quality of the membrane help determine the effectiveness of the process. Reverse osmosis is effective in removing large amounts of inorganic chemicals such as metals, minerals and salts, as well as several organic chemicals and most microorganisms. Reverse osmosis units usually use mechanical filters and activated carbon filters.
Ion exchange systems remove the minerals that cause hardness in your water supply, helping to soften it. Hard water is mainly caused by excess magnesium and calcium. The presence of these minerals in water interferes with the cleaning action of detergents and soaps and causes scale buildup in water heaters, fixtures, and hot water pipes. Water softeners also effectively remove some manganese, iron, and many heavy metals.
Water filtration removes impurities from the water, making it safe for consumption or use. Water filtration makes your water supply safer by removing or killing microbes and other contaminants. Different types of water filters are available to facilitate the filtration process.
